The Aroma of Christ

Dear Parents,

As we end the month of March, the signs of Spring finally seem to be appearing around us. The most obvious one is the warmer weather and sun that have joined us today. If you take a deep breath outside, you may even catch a small scent of Spring air. It is fascinating that God has created this world to give off a special smell during certain seasons that we can recognize when we are attuned to it.

This morning during chapel, Ms. Spence and some of our grade 7 students also talked about aromas. More specifically, we talked about popcorn kernels and how they relate to 2 Corinthians 2:15, which says, “For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” Earlier this morning, Ms. Spence brought in a popcorn maker and made a fresh batch. The entire gym was filled with the scent of popcorn as a result.

We also looked at a single kernel of corn that was unpopped. The majority of the audience agreed that they didn’t want to eat it and that it did not give off much of a scent. A few minutes later, it was added to the popcorn maker and something changed dramatically. It transformed into something much better that gave off a great smell and that was desirable to eat.

We are a lot like that piece of popcorn. We have the potential as Christians to give off a sweet aroma, that of Jesus Christ, and to become desirable to a dying world that needs Jesus and is seeking for something of value. To eventually give off a sweet aroma, we have to go through periods of heat and uncomfortability to then produce what God intended us to. Some of us may go through the heat and end up burnt or unpopped, if our hearts are not receptive to what Christ is doing; however, we will produce a beautiful aroma and flavour, if we persevere and endure.

Our prayer is that we, as the Trinity community, will produce a sweet smelling aroma to those around us and across our city. May others take notice of the fragrance of Christ that is on us and be drawn to Him as a result.

Sincerely,
J-D Lussier, Principal
