Dear Parents,

Throughout the month of February, we make it a point each year to recognize Black History month along with many other schools around Canada. We take the occasion to feature various authors, artists, and history makers that have a black cultural heritage. In some instances, they overcame immense obstacles, due in part because of the colour of their skin. We know that it was not actually their differences that were hard to overcome, but rather the barriers that were created by those who hold race as something to be valued and held over other individuals.

Consequently, many historians have not done justice to the stories of these individuals, and we have missed out on the richness of hearing about them. In many ways, this is what we are trying to accomplish by going deeper to uncover more stories that add to the depth of our own story.

In order to do this, it is important to take this a step further and recognize we are first and foremost part of God’s story. In Revelation 5:9-10, John paints the most beautiful scene of diversity, as he writes, “And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

In this picture, Jesus takes center stage, as the one who overcame every obstacle by carrying the sins of the world from every cultural background, and breaking those barriers to create a new people who were forgiven. These people representing every tribe, language, people, and nation are now free and equal before the throne of God.

Ultimately, we desire that every student at Trinity identifies first and foremost with Jesus and then recognizes the beauty of their cultural heritage, as it contributes to the kaleidoscope of our unique community. So while we may be elevating one culture this month, it is in essence to ensure that it is valued and esteemed as highly as the others. We want to continue to highlight other cultures as well throughout the year, so that together we can bring glory to God.
